The Dan Armstrong web site (danarmstrongDOTorg) has detailed information on the reissues and the original (bass and guitar); hats off to those that did the prodigious research. Both pickups, truss rod tool, and original Ampeg gig bag included. The second bass modification was for basses with a serial number below D2000A and is a way to update the Dan Armstong bass with a toggle switch. It had the original case with METRO sprayed on and a couple of round stickers on each side. Sort of fairy Lord Of The Rings type pictures. The guitar is really early without going up to the loft I think the number is. Dan Armstrong - The man and his guitars. A biography and tribute to the inventor of the clear lucite guitar For the origins of the Dan Armstrong bass, it is highly recommended to first read through the guitar section, for with the guitar prototype completed, building the bass guitar was going to be a somewhat easier task as Dan & Matt didn't.

This is a very early Dan Armstrong bass, confirmed not only by the low serial number, but also by use of slot-style screws to attach the bridge plate. Also notice that the body has the long route for the pickup, which was a legacy from the even earlier version when the pickup was held in place with a metal plate. Ampeg then went to a thumb screw on the back to secure the pickup, although on this particular bass it looks like it's missing.
The bass seems to be in above-average condition (especially the pickup) but it's a shame that someone drilled two holes in the pickguard. Looks like there were some aftermarket switches installed there at some point, which makes us wonder if the rest of the wiring is original.
